Summer Trip
Summer Trip marked Kumi's big comeback after her very short hiatus due to her pregnancy. This was her first summer single since 4 TIMES in 2011 so I was really curious to hear what Kumi was about to bring to the table.
Here's my review:
01. Radio Show Start ~LALALALALA~ [Intro] Awful intro, don't have anything to say about this. Just terrible.
02. LALALALALA is fun, catchy and has a fresh pop-rock production. I feel that this song was just a simple summer treat and it shouldn't have made the final cut. I think that LALALALALA doesn't reach Kumi's quality standards despite being enjoyable, I really like the video 6/10
03. Show Time ~IS THIS TRAP~ [Interlude] If it wasn't for the embarrassing presence of this random radio dj, the music in the background actually could have been a good interlude!
04. IS THIS TRAP? At first, IS THIS TRAP? didn't get me so excited, I felt that it lacked something but with time it grew on me thanks to its production and its amazing pre-chorus. The hook itself is powerful as well despite being a bit repetitive. The bridge is awsome! This song is fun and fresh, perfect for the summer! I just miss some distinctive vocals...8/10
05. Show Time ~TOUCH DOWN~ [Interlude] This guy just won't stop talking nonsense! The cheesy promotion of the MVs on the single is just pathetic! Again the music in the background sounds cool.
06. TOUCH DOWN is a great song which experiments by mixing hip hop and rock for an explosive result! The vocals are great and fierce, I totally love this sexy and badass song! The bridge is the only weak part but the rest of the song smokes! 9/10
07. Radio Show End [Outro] Ok, just skip these damned intro/interludes/outro!!
Final Virdict:
Summer Trip left me a bit confused. There are 2 extremely good songs and one which is just a so so but overall it has a cool summer feel but the lack of a choesive sound and the annoying radio dj really are two major flaws. It debuted at #6 on the Weekly Oricon Chart with 19,003 copies and it has now sold more than 22,800 physical copies.
I liked the idea of Koda Radio 9.3 but it would have been perfect just with the voice saying, "Koda Radio, Summer Trip" because all that talking about Kumi's videos, different outfits, five or six costume changes is really cheesy. That is especially bad when the music in the backround seems to be so good and promising as normal intrumental intro/interlude/outro.
I don't think this was her best single but I definitely listened to it a lot in the beach when it came out
Summer Trip: 7.5
