Go To The Top

[2012.10.24]
Go To The Top was the firs single after Kumi's hiatus in 2012 due to her pregnancy, so the hype was really great! The single was also her first #1 hit on the Weekly Oricon Chart since Alive/Physical Thing in 2009 selling 54,559. The title track was used as the opening theme of the anime series Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse while the b-side Darling is a soft love ballad. The single is certified GOLD for shipment of 100,000 units and it had sold around 70,000 physical copies.
Here's my review:
01. Go To The Top is an explosive mix of electronic sounds and rock elements with hip hop and dubstep details. The production is edgy but at the same time it flows easily and it's enjoyable. The chorus is catchy and the overall melody is great. The only downside to me is the dubstep bridge. Go To The Top is one of my Kumi's favourite song and I got super excited for Kumi's comeback when it came out also because of the inspiring lyrics 9/10
02. Darling is a gentle love ballad and this time it's a cheerful one. The production is very simple just like the melody, it's something very different from the title track so the overall single doens't sound so choesive but Darling is very sweet in its simplicity 7/10
03. Go to the top [DJ AKi ASY Remix] this is the same single we find on Driving Hit's 5, nothing special really. It could have been a cool feature if it was exclusive but since we can find this remix elsewhere, it's not a big deal. I would have preferred the Go To The Top Instrumental

Final Virdict:
Go To The Top is a good single, I would have preferred a stronger b-side but overall I was very satisfied with this release. The MV is great and original, I really liked the QR code displayed on the billboard during the video. I didn't get the whole visual of the artworks but I guess Avex wanted to hide a chubby, post-pregnancy Kumi, nevertheless the cover arts are cool.
